Setting Up & Using SkyDrive

This is a link to the SkyDrive PowerPoint presentation given at the SCORCC General Meeting. View it by clicking beneath the window. (The link above that says "Start Slide Show" tends to get you an error message.) You can click the F11 key at the top of your keyboard to view it full screen size, and click the F11 key again when you're finished. This is a link to the handout in rtf format which you can download. This is a link to the handout as a Word doc which some may be able to view.

For XP users: This is a link to XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) which you will need in order to use SkyDrive, if you don't already have it. If you wish to use the free MS Office apps in SkyDrive (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & OneNote), you will need this MS Office Compatibility Pack which contains XP SP2 within it. Additionally, for the Office web apps you will need MS Word viewer, MS Excel viewer, and MS PowerPoint viewer in order to view documents generated in these programs on your computer and be able to print and/or save them.

After you double-click the program icon, press F11 at the top of your keyboard to make the presentation larger and easier to read. Use the arrows beneath the program to navigate (as opposed to the link above it.) Press F11 again to be able to view your menu & toolbars. If you can't view the program, it likely means that you don't have PowerPoint or PowerPoint Viewer on your computer. If that is the case, this is a link to the free download of PointPoint Viewer from Microsoft. The links in the online presentation are active.

This is a link to the chart handout, and this is the Notes handout. If you are printing these out from IE or Firefox browser, be sure to use the print preview, which has adjustments to make everything viewable on 1 page each. In IE there's a button on the menu bar to remove the automatically added header & footer. Above the page are arrows to adjust the margins. To close the preview, move your mouse to the top of the screen, & right click to see "close." In Firefox preview there's a page setup button. Try 73% for the Notes handout to fit on the page (this may work for the chart, also). There is a Close button in Firefox.

This is a link to the E-Mail handout. There's something I didn't think to mention when the question came up regarding the infamous little red x that sometimes appears where a photo should have been...Though usually it's the fault of the sender, if you have your security settings too high, your e-mail program may "think" that the photo was unsafe and not allow it. (Assuming that you have an anti-virus program on your computer), in both Outlook Express & Windows Live Mail you can go to Tools/Options (in Win Live Mail it's Tools/Safety Options) then click the Security tab. Choose "Internet Zone, less secure, but more functional," and choose the options to disallow blocking of images & attachments. I have no problems with these lesser security settings, but you should only do this if you feel comfortable with revising these settings.

Note: I mentioned during the SIG that both the list of features that these browsers share and features that these browsers don't all have in common are not ALL of the features that would pertain to a given browser. If you do a Google search for "browsers wikipedia" (without the quotes) you can find more info on browsers than you ever wanted to know! Below is a screen shot of the Top Sites feature in the Safari browser. This is a unique feature that allows you to create a homepage of up to 24 of your favorite / frequently visited sites--with panoramic thumbnails of those sites. If you download the Safari browser, which is free, and click on help you will see a link to the setup info for Top Sites on the initial help page. Click on photo for larger view.
